A Filipino architect named Rafael Nelson Aboganda was able to create an unbelievable and totally impossible stairs inside a known university in the US. The said stairways, called Escherian Stairwell allow users to go up but will eventually end up going back where they started.

According to animation graduate student Michael Lacanilao who uploaded the video on YouTube, Aboganda created the Escherian Stairwell inside the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in New York back in 1968. Since then, he went missing and only a few students knew about his masterpiece.

Rafael Nelson Aboganda was born on October 24, 1944 and is a native of Nagcarlan, Laguna. Besides being an architect and inventor, he is also involved in agricultural and rural development. But because of his extreme passion in impossible designs, he launched TheInventSchool in 1973.

Based on earlier reports, Aboganda’s work was inspired by Penrose steps, which was originally designed by father and son, Lionel and Roger Penrose back in the 1950s. It was first introduced publicly by M. C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist known for designing impossible objects.

Because of its unique structure, this ascending-descending stairs was virtually created and was featured in “Inception,” an Academy-award winning science fiction film released in 2010. Christopher Nolan directed the movie, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio. The Penrose stairs scene became controversial.

As you can see on the video, the university has a program titled “Can You Imagine?” with hosts Kevin and Stephanie. After they talked about their previous annual show, Kevin can be seen asking some students about the Escherian Stairwell. But apparently, none of them knew about the impossible loop stairway.

Shortly, Kevin and Rosie (a student of RIT) can been standing near the Escherian Stairwell. The host asked her if this is the first time she has ever been in the area, and she said, “Yes.” She also swore that she has never climbed this impossible stairway.

You can see a continuous camera following Rosie as she climbs the stairs. She looks back at Kevin and the host told her to go ahead. But after reaching the top, she was shocked to see him. Rosie went down the stairs as quickly as possible, only to see Kevin again. Obviously, she couldn’t believe what happened.

On the next scene, you can see Kevin explaining how to make sure that the Escherian Stairwell is for real. According to him, anyone using the mysterious stairs can bring a glass of water with him. This way, he can see if there is any part of the stairs that is tilted that makes the trick possible.
